Loaded with black currant and spring flower characteristics as well as a nice lashing of minerality, this sleeper of the vintage is a medium to full-bodied, luscious St.-Estephe to enjoy now and over the next 10-12 years. P.S. Tronquoy Lalande’s second wine, the Tronquoy de Sainte-Anne, is also worth considering. Usually a blend of two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon and one-third Merlot from younger vines, the 2008 is good and the 2010 is slightly better.

Tasted at the Richards Walford tasting in London. This has much more vigour on the nose than the 2007 as one would expect: quite dense, blackberry, raspberry and scorched earth, mingling with cedar and sous-bois. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, a nice saline touch on the entry with firm grippy tannins. There is a slight attenuation towards the sappy finish, but overall this 2008 has good substance and very fine balance. Tasted January 2012.

Tasted blind. Dark crimson. Strong cassis essence. Polished and embryonic but well-constructed. Desperately needs food at this point in its evolution! Lots of glamour. (JR)

Light, simple fruit. Very fine tannins, moderate length, savoury finish. Correct and balanced. (RH)
