Tasting Notes and Scores
I am a huge fan of 1998 Pomerols, so I was happy to drink the Vieux Château Certan. And I am equally enthusiastic about 1998 reds from Bolgheri in Tuscany, so the 1998 Ornellaia was a treat. Check out my vlog from the morning after. I scored them both 97 points.

Really nice example of Pomerol here, with lots of fresh juicy plums, truffle, cocoa, flowers and dark cherry notes. Soft, but with an edge to the texture, this is drinking very well today. It will probably improve, but there is no reason to wait to pop a cork. Nov 2013

Bright ruby-red. Cassis, raspberry, cedar, lead pencil and spicy oak on the nose. Rich, sweet and deep, with firm acids giving grip and verve to the plum, raspberry, lead pencil and bitter chocolate flavors. Wonderfully concentrated, lively and very long. The yield here, according to Thienpont, was just 34 hectoliters per hectare.

A fine offering, the 1998 has closed down, but there is no doubting its fabulous potential. The color is a dense purple. The wine reveals high tannin, huge body, and classy black fruits intermixed with minerals, spice box, cedar, and tobacco. A long, persistent, tannic finish gives this majestic effort a closed but formidable personality. Patience will be required. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2030.

Tasted from bottle at Mark Walford’s annual lunch at Waterside Inn. The ‘98 VCC has an expressive bouquet, perhaps more modern in style compared to the more traditional ‘99. There is an exotic touch with cassis and blueberry scents wafting temptingly from the glass, menthol and orange blossom. The palate is medium-bodied with plenty of sappy red fruit and a sumptuous, quite glossy finish. I am not as taken as this Pomerol as I was three of four years ago, but it is still a flash VCC that has an opulent air about it. Tasted May 2013.
