2002 Vieux Chateau Certan, Pomerol

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2002
Region: Bordeaux, Pomerol
% Alcohol: 13.50

Vieux Château Certan is unquestionably one of Pomerol's superstars. Located in the heart of the plateau in Pomerol, it is surrounded by some of the best in the appellation; Petrus, Conseillante, and L'Evangile, amongst others. The wine is made by Alexandre Thienpont, nephew of Jacques at Le Pin, and his son Guillaume. These are two of the most dedicated and talented winemakers to be found in Bordeaux. Thoughtful, reflective and understated, their focus on the vineyard is unparalleled. Unusually for a Pomerol, Vieux Chateau Certan contains a high proportion of Cabernet Franc, which explains its elegance and finesse. But arguably what makes VCC so special is the focus on vine age. The reality is that old vines on the wrong soil, or in the wrong place, make wine no better than young vines – in fact, it can make things worse as old vines can be more susceptible to diseases. But put old vines in the right place and treat them properly, take time to get to know each vine individually, and you have something very special indeed. This is what they have at VCC. Even when replanting the very best sites, the family will wait 20 to 25 years before using that block for the Grand Vin.

Tasting Notes and Scores

93 RMPJ

A terrific effort, this classic blend of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits a dark ruby/purple color as well as a complex bouquet of cedar, spice box, black cherries, and cassis. With impressive purity, medium body, moderate tannin, and a long finish (40 plus seconds), it will be at its finest between 2008-2018.

Bright ruby-red. Pungent, pure aromas of cassis, bitter cherry, bitter chocolate and flowers. Dense and sweet but also racy and precise, with superb purity and cut. Really penetrating, exuberant flavors of dark fruits, licorice, violet and bitter chocolate. Bright, subtle and gripping on the finish.

Aromas of sweet plums and spices follow through to a full-bodied palate, with firm tannins and a solid core of fruit. This is very tightly knit and needs to unravel with bottle age. Turns big and chewy with air. This has excellent potential. James Suckling

(70% merlot, 20% cabernet franc and 10% cabernet sauvignon) Good full red. Expressive aromas of mocha, game, tobacco and smoke. Moderately sweet and dense, with a supple texture for the year. And yet the wine's underlying minerality gives it a firmness and contributes to the impression of vinosity. Finishes with excellent length and no dryness. I'd give this three to five years of aging before pulling the cork.

The 2002 Vieux Château Certan, picked between September 20 and October 2, has never really been my favorite vintage from this period. Maybe I was a little mean in the past? It offers attractive brambly red fruit, damp loam, and a touch of wild mint. It is rustic and conservative in style yet charming. The palate is fresh on the entry with grainy tannins. Modest in depth, yet with aeration, a sense of brightness emanating from the Merlot begins to emerge, and it has a lovely graphite-tinged finish. This is perfect to drink now rather than cellar. Tasted at the VCC vertical in Etikhove, Belgium.

70 % Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Made in the blockbuster era but showing the elegance of VCC. ‘From winter to the start of summer, 2002 was marked by mild temperatures and moderate rainfall, with an early budburst in the vines in March followed by an even flowering at the end of May. After a very sunny June, July and August were cool and rainy. Fortunately, fine weather set in from 9 September. Harvest took place between 20 September and 2 October .’ Deep glowing garnet with mature nose. Dusty but intriguing nose. Really nice balance. A ‘drinking wine’! Fragrant. Very emphatic with lots of fruit and fine tannins only just fading. Long, smooth as satin and perfect for drinking now and for the rest of the decade. Long redcurrant finish. A nice surprise. (JR)
