2005 Vieux Chateau Certan, Pomerol

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2005
Region: Bordeaux, Pomerol
% Alcohol: 13.50

Vieux Château Certan is unquestionably one of Pomerol's superstars. Located in the heart of the plateau in Pomerol, it is surrounded by some of the best in the appellation; Petrus, Conseillante, and L'Evangile, amongst others. The wine is made by Alexandre Thienpont, nephew of Jacques at Le Pin, and his son Guillaume. These are two of the most dedicated and talented winemakers to be found in Bordeaux. Thoughtful, reflective and understated, their focus on the vineyard is unparalleled. Unusually for a Pomerol, Vieux Chateau Certan contains a high proportion of Cabernet Franc, which explains its elegance and finesse. But arguably what makes VCC so special is the focus on vine age. The reality is that old vines on the wrong soil, or in the wrong place, make wine no better than young vines – in fact, it can make things worse as old vines can be more susceptible to diseases. But put old vines in the right place and treat them properly, take time to get to know each vine individually, and you have something very special indeed. This is what they have at VCC. Even when replanting the very best sites, the family will wait 20 to 25 years before using that block for the Grand Vin.

Tasting Notes and Scores

97 JS

This begins with a sexy roasted fruit character on the nose, then opens up to hints of spice, chocolate, wet earth, and dried flowers. The palate is incredible, with a concentration that builds, and a finish that remains agile and racy. Very defined and beautiful wine with great length and freshness. This still needs some time in the bottle.

A stunning effort from Alexander Thienpont, the 2005 Vieux Chateau Certan (a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc) reveals an inky/blue/purple color along with a rich, sumptuous perfume of black olives, lavender, roasted herbs, licorice, pain grille, and oodles of truffles as well as creme de cassis. In the mouth, hints of chocolate and charcoal also make an appearance along with good acidity, fabulous purity, and a full-bodied, powerful mouthfeel. In keeping with the style of this terroir, the wine is reserved and restrained, but deep. It should develop magnificently, and age for 30-40 years. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2035.

Alexandre Thienpont fashioned an impressive ’05 that I have been fortunate enough to taste multiple times. It has a strict, linear and primal nose that remain broody, with hints of crushed stone and truffle that emerge with time. The palate is supremely well balanced with crushed stone, expressive Cabernet Franc and a wonderful, structured finish that is very persistent in the mouth. This needs another four or five years to reach its plateau. Tasted December 2012.

Sleek and refined, without the obvious tannic spine of the vintage, but loaded with smoldering tobacco, bay leaf and alder notes, melded fully with the core of black currant and blackberry fruit. The structure is defined by length and cut rather than sheer force.—Blind '01/'03/'05 Bordeaux retrospective (December 2017). JM

Wine Spectator

(80% merlot) Bright ruby-red. Very closed nose hints at licorice and nutty oak. Sweet and broad in the mouth, with a chocolatey ripeness but less energy and grip than the 2006. This is more mouthfilling, and more sexy today in the middle palate, but may ultimately be less complex. Or is it just more reserved today? Finishes with substantial tannins that call for at least several years of aging.
