This offers a completely different aromatic profile with its intense floral, earth and spice aromas that add considerable breadth to the red currant, plum and blue pinot fruit suffused nose. The flavors are not quite as concentrated or complex as those of the Clos de la Roche but the tannins are finer and there is slightly better detail as well on the dusty, firm and hugely long finish. We'll see in time but there appears to be just a bit more overall potential and hence the very slight difference in the ranges. Drink: 2023+

(all from Mazoyeres-Chambertin vines: 0.9 hectare at the top of the appellation along the Route des Grands Crus, and 0.8 hectare from 45-year-old vines at the bottom; 25% new oak): Good full red. Musky aromas of redcurrant, smoke, animal fur and dried flowers. Silky and fine-grained, in a distinctly feminine style for Mazoyeres. Raspberry and currant flavors are accented by pepper and herbs and complicated by a saline element. Very subtle and perfumed wine with a seriously palate-dusting finish. I like the combination of red fruits, soil tones and flowers.

Bright ruby. Very intense nose. Sweet and winning. Very cuddly wine that may be a bit too sweet for purists but should seduce neophytes. (JR)
