Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Forêts Saint Georges felt a little pushed on the nose, perhaps slightly overworked in the winery? There is some good fruit here but it feels bold and lacks a little grace. The palate is ripe and stocky on the entry, a Nuits Saint Georges that places weight and density above complexity and nuance, rendering the finish a tad one-dimensional. This was a disappointing showing after such a fine performance in barrel. I will leave a question mark rather than a score at the moment. Tasted September 2016.

Monopole. 40% whole bunch in this vintage. Sweet and toasty on the nose, plenty of cherry fruit and some char character. Firm, dry and spicy. Savoury and moreish but there are barriers up at the moment, giving a dry tannic first impression and hiding the fruit underneath. (JH)

Fleshy, à point black fruit and an attractive pepper and sappy herbal character. More complete than their Petit Arlot premier cru. (RH)

Reduction masking fruit on the nose. The palate is a bit inky and lacking in flesh. There’s power – but let’s see if the wine resolves properly. (AH)
