Tasting Notes and Scores
The 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Forêts St Georges is a lovely wine in the making, wafting from the glass with aromas of cherries, wild berries, spices, licorice and smoked meats. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and textural, its muscular chassis of powdery tannin entirely cloaked in fruit, concluding with a long and nicely defined finish.

An intriguing nose with plenty of spice notes, a touch of kirsch and a hint of menthol. Its dark hue is reflected in the primary black fruit on the palate. Fine, ripe tannins and subtle oak, this needs at least two years to settle down but will be memorable and has a long future ahead. Harvested between 1-7 September.

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Fôrets Saint Georges 1er Cru, one of the two monopoles of the domaine, is completely de-stemmed and sees around 45% new oak. Funnily enough, it has a very Vosne-like bouquet with floral aspects permeating the blueberry and wild strawberry fruit. The medium-bodied palate offers supple tannins and fine depth. Very smooth in texture, with impressive harmony. It just needs a little more tension and personality toward the blackberry-driven finish; the Clos de l’Arlot is imbued with a little more charm at present. The tannins will need several years to soften, and then this will really show its mettle.

Mid garnet. Light appetising toastiness on the wonderfully perfumed nose with some violets too. Mouth-filling. Really lovely and sumptuous. Great medium weight and balance. So pretty! Though the tannins are very much in the background to the fruit. Just light dryness on the end. Amazingly approachable! I wonder whether it will go into its shell? I’ll assume not with my drink dates. (JR)

Marked toffee oak, overlayed on ripe, mixed black fruit. Intense and spicy, this is more in a rich than an elegant vein. Fair length. (TJ)

Darker fruited than the Mont des Oiseaux. Lightly spiced. Attractive dark-fruited delicacy on the palate. Quite light in body but well balanced and elegant. (JH)
