The 2019 Maranges La Fussières 1er Cru Rouge, which contains around 30% whole bunches, has a well-defined nose with autumn leaves and tea leaf infusing the vibrant red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a structured opening, very fresh and brimming with tension, harmonious from start to finish with a liberal sprinkling of cracked black pepper on the very sustained aftertaste. Excellent.

Cask sample. Deepish crimson. Dark-fruited and a little bit peppery, with a light herbal note that smells like whole-bunch influence. A whack of lovely ripe fruit on the palate – quite unexpectedly rich and rounded, the tannins soft but deep. Chewy and vibrantly fruity with sufficient freshness to balance. A touch of heat at the back of the palate, suggesting highish alcohol. (JH)
