Tasting Notes and Scores

92.5 ST

Full red-ruby. Explosive aromas of blackberry, violet face powder, mint and spices. Densely packed and tight, with dynamic flavors of dark berries, minerals, violet and licorice. Finishes very long and very fine, sweetened by new oak and lifted by floral perfume.

Don't miss! Surprisingly forward and expressive for young La Romanée with incredibly concentrated, smoky, slightly oaky, spicy black fruit aromas that lead to velvety, dense, tight, understated, broad scaled flavors of stunning length. The depth here is nothing short of mind blowing and this is clearly a notch up from the 2000 if not quite as promising as either the '98 or the '99. Still, with the astonishing level of extract, this could conceivably surprise on the upside. Drink: 2013-25

Tasted at the La Romanée vertical at Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair. The 2001 La Romanée Grand Cru, which is a Bouchard Père et Fils bottling and was picked on September 21, was represented by a late release bottle from 2014. It has a rather one-dimensional nose that unfolds in the glass, offering light raspberry and cranberry scents, though never quite achieving grand cru quality. The palate is medium-bodied with juicy ripe tannins, a little saline in the mouth, spicy and forthright with a gentle grip toward the finish. There is piquant red cherry fruit that gives it a tartness that does not quite sit well. Tasted June 2015.
