Tasting Notes and Scores
From Jeroboam. Bouchard purchased the site in 1791 and now hold 3.92ha. Fred Weber describes the vineyard as the 'fillet mignon' within Beaune-Grèves. Not surprisingly given the age/bottle size, primary characters are very dominant but there is clearly massive potential here. As the wine breathes, lovely aromas of raspberry/blackberry and violets evolve. Rich, ripe, pure dark fruit on the palate, subtle oak, mouthfilling and concentrated, with silky tannin and vibrant acidity providing the structure for long-term ageing. A great vintage and a great Beaune Premier Cru.

What a fragrant nose of flowers, cherries, licorice and delicate spice! Very elegant and lacy on the medium-bodied palate with breathtaking integration of fine fruit and fine tannins. Super-silky, long finish thatâs very sensual. Drink or hold.

The 2019 Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves Vigne de l'Enfant Jesus is showing beautifully, bursting from the glass with scents of raspberries, warm spices, plums and incense. Medium to full-bodied, sumptuous and enveloping, with an ample core of fruit and supple, melting tannins, it's immensely charming and gourmand. I can't remember an Enfant Jesus that tasted so good, so young.

The 2019 Beaune-Grèves Vigne de l'Enfant Jésus 1er Cru is tasted from jeroboam. It has an attractive nose with brambly red fruit that becomes darker with aeration; touches of blackberry and damp undergrowth/autumn leaves emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and good structure, lightly spiced with white pepper. It's sapid toward the finish. This shows good potential.

A 3.92-ha 'exclusivity' (within Beaune Grèves, which is 30 ha) bought by Bouchard in 1791 from the nuns of Beaune. Soils are limestone, clay, sand and gravel, mid slope so more like a grand cru, suggests winemaker Fred Weber. He points out that you have to understand the delicate tannins you get from this site when you make the wine and the very specific aromas, which the wine retains even as it ages. But you must rack at the right time. Served from a jeroboam. ND tech cork for this wine (the sort that has been individually analysed to screen for cork taint) and for some of the other PC. Diam for the lower tiers. Mid crimson. Subtle, beautifully floral. On the palate, it is succulent, intense and so refined, and interminably long. Gorgeous silky texture at such a young age, so much so that you could drink it now though you would then miss so much of its future. (JH)
