I also revisited Cathiard's 2015 Nuit-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Thorey, a wine I had not tasted since early 2017. Wafting from the glass with a bouquet of red berries, orange rind, peonies, rich soil tones and deep carnal nuances, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and muscular, with a rich and concentrated core of fruit, refined tannins and a long, perfumed finish. This is still young, but it's evolving very gracefully indeed.

The 2015 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Thorey 1er Cru offers attractive woodland and tertiary scents on the nose; compact red berry fruit and a touch of black truffle emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins and slightly confit in style, with marmalade-tinged red fruit and allspice toward the finish. Excellent, but it needs much more time in bottle.

Healthy dark red. Alluring violet lift to the aromas of cassis, boysenberry and minerals. Juicy, sappy wine with a captivating sugar/acid balance to its intense, youthfully primary dark berry flavors. Substantial tannins are well supported by the wine's fruit and provide excellent backbone for aging. Long on the aftertaste.

Vines are 60+ years old – same age as Sylvain. Really very rich nose with good silky texture and round tannins. Seductive. Tasted again on 10 January 2017: Much smoother on the finish than when I first tasted it. (JR)
