Extravagant aromas of spices and black cherries are found in the nose of the wonderful 2001 Chambertin Clos de Beze. Light to medium-bodied, it broadens on the tongue, revealing candied red cherries and fresh raspberries. A fresh, well-balanced, and powerful offering, it is concentrated, deep, and long. Projected maturity: 2005-2012. Bruno Clair, one of the only vignerons to own vines from Savigny-Les-Beaune in the south to Marsannay in the north, said “2001 was a nice year for the Cote de Nuits but a difficult one in the Cote de Beaune, a true vigneron vintage where conscientious vineyard work was essential. Moderately saturated medium red. Sappy, perfumed aromas of cherry, stone and spice, with a hint of more exotic fruits. Dense and silky on the palate, conveying a strong impression of solidity and soil character. Sweetened by a hint of caramelly oak (40% of the wine was aged in new barrels) that is even stronger on the layered back end. Much easier to taste today than the Clos Saint-Jacques.

Quite light ruby hue. An odd petrol nose (no, I do not know why either) becomes earthier on acquaintance. Medium-bodied with good acidity. Sweet ripe cherry but lacks the complexity of Clos St. Jacques. Very good but not great. Tasted January 2003.

High toned. Aromatic and quite exciting. Very slightly dull at the moment. No great weight or tension. Sleepy. (cask sample) (JR)
