Tasting Notes and Scores
This is spicier still with an essence of black currant violet and plum scents that are framed in a touch of wood toast. There is good freshness and verve to the broad-shouldered, powerful and tautly muscular flavors yet the robust character is softened by the same very fine-grained tannins that all of the prior wines display. I very much like the quality of the underlying material and while the tannins may be refined, they're also dense and this will clearly require extended cellar time to arrive at its full potential. Good deep red-ruby. Delicate, precise aromas of black cherry, currant, violet, cool menthol, licorice, herbs and iron. Spicy and energetic, with a distinctly sappy purity to the dark fruit and mineral flavors. In a very linear style today and still tightly wound. Broadens out nicely on the back end, which features noble, fine-grained tannins and a chewy, saline quality. Not a big wine but juicy and refined.

The 2011 Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru has a very well-defined bouquet with dark black cherries and cold-stone scents merging into briary and boysenberry. The palate is smooth and sensual with lower acidity than the Echezeaux, a sweet core of dark-berry fruit and a silky smooth finish. This is a commendable Grands Echezeaux, though it does not have the edge over its little brother. Drink 2017-2030. Importer: Country Vintners (US) and Berry Brother & Rudd (UK)
