The 2016 Clos de Vougeot is an exquisite wine. A burst of sweet red berry and floral notes make a strong opening statement. Delicate and lithe on the palate, the 2016 is such a sensual Burgundy. Clean mineral notes lend vibrancy throughout. I would prefer to cellar the 2016 for at least a few years to let the bright acids mellow a touch, but opening a bottle now is far from a crime.

(50% new oak): Healthy dark red. Sappy perfume of cherry, raspberry, cranberry and red licorice complicated by smoky soil tones. Fresh and dense but tightly wound. Conveys an impression of thickness but this is not a particularly fleshy wine, at least in the early going. Boasts lovely delicacy to its red fruit and soil flavors but still extremely young. The pHs of these 2016s, by the way, are between 3.6 and 3.65.

Organic. Cask sample. Mid cherry. Fresh and deeply fragrant and sweet-fruited on the nose. Dry, light tannins. All in balance and a nice chalky finish. Dry but mouth-watering finish. (JH)
