Tasting Notes and Scores
This wine needed a few minutes and some swirling before it began in blossom into a pretty floral and fruit perfume of lilacs, red cherries and crushed raspberries with a slightly wild, meaty / earthy undercurrent. Medium bodied, it really delivers in the mouth with elegant but intense flavors, crisp acid, medium-firm very fine-grained tannins and a long finish.

Limpid ruby. The nose is much fuller than the Vosne-Romanee with a definite hedgerow nose. Then notes of strawberry and tar begin to evolve. Quite complex for Echezeaux. The palate has good weight with fine balance. Beautiful sweet core of cherry and strawberry, but not DRC's usual silky texture - this has a rustic edge to it. A little tar on the finish. A very impressive Echezeaux. Tasted February 2005.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti's 2002 Echézeaux came across as quite powerful, rich and deep, with sweet tannins and layers of round, generous fruit.

Deep ruby. This too is very spicy and even more aromatically expressive revealing linear, taut, intense, wonderfully complex, solidly structured flavors that display impressive acid/fruit/tannin balance. This culminates in a gorgeous inner mouth perfume and a tight, very firm finish of notable length. This may have over achieved in 2002 relative to its usual standard.

Medium red. Complex aromas of red- and blackcurrant, Oriental spices and sweet oak. Sweeter and lusher than the premier cru, with more breadth. Expressive notes of spice and chocolatey torrefaction. A fatter, richer wine with more material to support its dusty tannins.

Robert Parker''s Wine Advocate 30/06/2004 The 2002 Echezeaux displays a demure nose of herbal, pepper-laced blackberries. Less generous at this stage than the Vosne, it has a light to medium-bodied character with white pepper, black fruit, and stone flavors. Its long finish reveals highly present, structure-giving tannin. Drink it between 2007-2014. ()
