2009 Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, Vosne-Romanee Premier Cru, Cuvee Duvault-Blochet

A classic Vosne nose that is at once very spicy and very pinot offers up ripe yet very fresh red and black berry liqueur aromas. There is fine detail and excellent precision to the seductively textured medium-bodied flavors that possess outstanding depth and seriously good length as well. This may well be the best vintage for this wine ever made, at least since modern day production of it was recommenced in 1999. There is so much sap that it will be approachable young but age well too. Drink: 2021+

The 2009 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru is pure silkiness and refinement from the first taste. Rose petals, red berries, licorice and mint radiate on the palate in this gracious, totally impeccable Burgundy. This is a strong vintage for the Vosne 1er.

Tasted at “The Sampler” icon tasting in London. The intermittent Premier Cru from DRC would embarrass many a Grand Cru and their 2009 is wonderful. The 2009 has a fine, delicate bouquet with dark cherry, plum, scorched earth and even a cheeky touch of white pepper. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, chalky tense tannins and vibrant acidity. There is fine structure on the finish that is still very backward, and perhaps it might benefit from a little more persistency, but it is a lovely wine. Tasted December 2012.

(a premier cru made from the second passage through old vines in the estate's crus; previously offered in 1999, 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008): High-toned aromas of strawberry, raspberry, orange zest and minerals, with a slightly roasted note emerging with aeration. At once fully ripe and energetic, with terrific mineral and floral cut to the racy red fruit flavors. Finishes strong and long. A very good showing.

The 2009 Vosne-Romanee Cuvee Duvault-Blochet is a supple, racy wine. Layers of dark fruit blossom on the palate as this gorgeous, textured wine opens up in the glass. Sweet, silky tannins frame the exquisite finish. The Cuvee Duvault-Blochet is made from a second selection of fruit across all of the Domaine''s vineyards in Vosne. In its finest vintages it is a terrific wine that delivers plenty of the winery''s signature style at a slightly more accessible price. A recent bottle of the 2006 was striking. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039.

Contains second harvest and some rejected Romanée St-Vivant. Dark ruby. Smells of something animal and great richness. Intense and wild and ripe but very firm on the finish. Really untamed wine. Not especially seductive and sweet but very much sings its own song. Tastes as though it is firming up. But the peacock’s tail on the end is amazing. Aubert de Villaine requires that this wine announces the character of the vintage. (JR)
