Tasting Notes and Scores
The 2011 Beaune Clos des Mouches impresses for its intensity. Green pears, exotic flowers, mint, citrus and crushed rocks are all very much alive in the glass. The flavors are beautifully defined in a salivating, crystalline wine full of personality. Clos des Mouches remains one of the undiscovered jewels of Burgundy in its price range. The 2011 is likely to enjoy broad drinking window that will last several decades.

Bright medium-deep red. Musky aromas of dark berries, licorice and minerals. Juicy, suave and fine-grained, with dark fruit flavors complicated by enticing subtle minerality and a whiff of game bird. Dry, classic wine with good density and and depth. Finishing flavors of dark berries, flowers and minerals give lovely lift to the primary back end. Really refreshing stony energy here.

Outstanding. Here too strong reduction and enough wood to notice render the nose problematic to read. There is excellent verve to the attractively textured and lightly mineral-inflected medium weight flavors that exhibit excellent intensity and detail on the long, bone dry and strikingly persistent finish. This is terrific. Drink: /2018+

The 2011 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches, which was of Drouhin’s first vineyard to be converted to biodynamics, has a light but fresh, defined bouquet with notes of cranberry, raspberry and strawberry fruit. The palate is quite tart on the entry: lifted, slightly candied red fruit with an approachable soft landing on the finish, a hint of white pepper popping up on the aftertaste. Drink this over the next decade. Drink now-2022.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. I am unsure about this bottle of Drouhin’s Beaune Clos des Mouche '11, which tasted better in the past. It exhibits some brett on the nose that slightly muffles the red berry fruit, rendering it a little rustic in style. The palate is medium-bodied with solid, ripe tannins. There is plenty of chewy red fruit here, although it feels quite stern on the structured finish that tapers off a little rapidly. I suspect another bottle would perform with more aplomb.

Bright crimson. Broad pretty fruit, very alluring and easy to love. Masses of fruit – such a spread! Already lovely. Very fine tannins on the end. Just a little kick of dryness on the finish but lovely mouth-filling stuff. (JR)
