Here the restrained yet markedly spicy and beautifully layered nose is composed of liqueur-like red and black cherry, earth and lavender aromas. This is sleeker and more refined than the Grands Ech though the medium plus weight flavors possess no better mid-palate concentration or power. There is plenty of the hallmark minerality and I very much like the texture on the balanced, persistent and harmonious finale. A wine of class and grace that should also age for years. Drink 2030+ (April 2015).

Healthy bright red. Reticent aromas of small wild red berries and truffley underbrush. Rich and fine-grained, with lovely lift to the utterly seamless, deep flavors of berries and earth. Not obviously superior to the Griotte, and not at all a powerhouse, but this tightly wound wine is still youthfully tight and will need years to unfold.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru has a slightly leaner bouquet than its peers: a pleasant leafiness filtering through the red and black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a piquant entry. This is tarty, higher in acidity than other Clos de Bèze, with Morello cherry, crushed strawberry and minerals towards the finish. It feels a little pointed at the moment but it has the substance to age. Tasted September 2016.

Two parcels. Partial whole cluster. 23 days' maceration, 14 months in oak. Ready for bottling. Part vinified in 500-l barrel. Some whole clusters but not at all obvious – will give elegance in age, says Véronique Drouhin. Mid cherry red. Smooth and rather hidden. A touch peppery, the fruit subtle but well pitched. Extreme refinement and excellent length, the tannins so fine and dry. (JH)
