Tasting Notes and Scores
The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru is more backward on the nose compared to its peers. Darker fruit, hints of black tea and clove surface with aeration, but it remains tight. The palate is more open, with notes of fleshy red fruit, black pepper and bay leaf, a powdery texture and a style that leans toward Morey. Quite persistent in the mouth, this is a Chambolle for those with cool, dank cellars. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru is lovely, mingling aromas of raspberries with hints of orange rind, spices and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's bright and lively, with ultra-refined tannins and a long, perfumed finish. As I've written before, this routinely excellent cuvée—which is mainly made from estate fruit—continues to fly a bit under the radar, so readers would do well to seek it out.

Blend of six different premiers crus vinified together (10% not owned by Drouhin), I think Véronique Drouhin said, but certainly blended quite early to provide some commercial volume. Final blend in tank, to be bottled by mid February 2021. Quite a deep crimson. The nose is a bit introvert at the moment, but the spread of subtle fruit across the palate is stunning! Velvety texture. This would make an excellent teaching tool to communicate Chambolle's special sumptuousness. Long and rich on the finish. Pure flattery. (JR)
