Tasting Notes and Scores
Outstanding. Here the fruit is more deeply pitched with excellent nuance to the well-layered blue and black pinot fruit that also evidences hints of violets, earth and wet stone. There is a clean and polished mouth feel (in the best sense) to the energetic and saline-infused flavors that are shaped by ripe tannins on the mouth coating, dusty and balanced finish. As it often is, this is a wine of finesse yet it doesn't lack for character and depth. Drink: 2023+

(85% vendange entier): Good full red. Black raspberry and spices on the nose, along with a whiff of fresh blood from reduction. At once dense and spicy, with pepper and herb notes (from the stems?) currently dominating the wine's mid-palate fruit. Firmly structured wine with youthfully tight tannins.

The 2011 Gevrey Chambertin Aux Combottes is built in a bright, mid-weight style that emphasizes tension and energy. All the elements are very nicely balanced, even if the 2011 favors structure over fruit, at least today. The Combottes was much more supple and expressive from barrel. It will be interesting to see if the fruit emerges with more time in bottle.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes 2011 has a more stemmy bouquet, but fresh and vital, more herbaceous than its peers with conspicuous tertiary scents. The palate is well-balanced and very classic in style, perhaps slightly green but in a positive sense because the lack of fruité is compensated by fine tension and poise. This is a Gevrey-Chambertin for those that appreciate traditional Burgundy. This has meliorated since last year and is more promising that I thought.

The 2011 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Combottes comes from the family’s 1.15-hectare plot and is aged in 75% new oak. Despite the higher level of wood, here it is better assimilated into the fruit concentration and allows the terroir to speak. The palate is nicely balanced with sappy black and red fruit, a gentle grip and a rounded, quite spicy finish with touches of citrus peel on the aftertaste. Drink 2014-2020.
