Tasting Notes and Scores

94 AM

Outstanding. An intensely spicy nose features notes of ripe black pinot fruit and plenty of floral influence in the form of violet and lavender scents. As would be expected this possesses plenty of size and weight with excellent mid-palate concentration, all wrapped in a powerful, palate coating and wonderfully long finish. This is a serious wine that will need at least 10 to 12 years to be approachable. Drink: 2026+

(most of these vines were planted in the 1960s and 1950s): Medium red. Less fruity and more oaky on the nose than the Beaux Monts, showing pungent spices and herbs. Then round, suave and dry on the palate; more opulent and spicy but less precise and obviously minerally than the fruitier, more compact Beaux Monts, showing a fine-grained, elegant texture. Finishes with building tannins that will need at least four or five years of bottle aging.

The 2011 Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts, which was tasted blind, was instantly identifiable as Dujac since that attractive stemmy character was evident on the nose, here intermixed with iodine, black fruit, tree bark and a hint of green bell pepper. The palate is medium-bodied and conveys the structure that one seeks in a Malconsorts. It feels primal and (of course) unready, suggesting that four or five years will be necessary to see this in full flight. It is a very decent Malconsorts even if I have tasted much better from Malconsorts from the domaine in the past. Tasted August 2016.

Light bricky ruby. Lifted and pretty red-cherry aroma. So much fruit fragrance and more open than the 2013. Less ripe on the palate than some, no unripeness but a touch herbal/dusty on the palate and a little bit dry on the finish. Fresh enough but not as strong as the vintages tasted so far today. (JH)
