The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Jeunes Rois was more reticent on the nose than Pierre Duroché's other nascent 2016s; however, there is fine complexity and mineralité already locked into this cuvée. Later there is a hint of licorice that adds another layer of complexity. The palate is medium-bodied and sports a caressing texture and a taut line of acidity. There is a spicy vein to this Gevrey-Chambertin, and after departing, the tongue is still fizzing with prenatal energy. I look forward to revisiting this after bottling, because this is a serious village cru.

Here the wood treatment is a bit more generous and includes a whiff of menthol on the liqueur-like dark berry fruit-suffused nose. The medium weight flavors are notably bigger, richer, denser and more powerful while possessing a velvety mouthfeel as well as outstanding depth and persistence on the youthfully austere finale. This mildly rustic effort is a classic Gevrey and offers 1er level quality.

Les Jeunes Rois hails from a parcel of vines planted in 1952 just below Champ, within the borders of Brochon. A more sauvage bouquet of wild berries, plums and forest floor is followed by a supple, fine-grained and full-bodied wine with lovely depth, concentration and sappy energy, its structural elements already very well integrated.

Juicy and sweet and charming. Accessible with purple fruit flavours. Not that much spread of flavour on the end. Fine but not a standout. (JR)
