Tasting Notes and Scores
The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, well-defined but backward. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, quite dense and layered with touches of allspice and pain d'épices, veins of blood orange towards the finish that feels quite long. I suspect this will close down after three or four years as it tends to do, otherwise, cellar it away for a decade.

A discreet but not invisible application of oak still easily allows the overtly floral and spicy ripe black cherry, raspberry and earth aromas to shine. There is a bit more size, weight and punch to the more obviously mineral-inflected flavors that terminate in a mildly austere and highly persistent that is quite serious but not necessarily more structured than the Gevrey Vieilles Vignes. Lovely.
