Tasting Notes and Scores

92 ST

Deep, bright red. Brooding aromas of redcurrant, smoked meat and animal fur, plus a suggestion of wet match. Intensely flavored and surprisingly high-pitched; dominated today by its brisk acidity and underlying minerality. The very long, rising finish displays outstanding energy to support a graceful evolution in bottle.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers is darker in color than its peers and the aromatics are more broody: blackberry and dark plum, a little sullen in the context of the vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, tightly coiled and like the aromatics, it feels a little contained and takes time to unfurl, though it does with several minutes in the glass. I would wait another 3-4 years or at least give this a couple of hours decanting -- this is certainly on of the better Cazetiers in this vintage. Tasted September 2016.

Good depth and brooding black fruit on the nose. A certain elegance and limestone grip on the palate. Pretty serious, if not the most intense expression. (AH)

Sweet oak spice and a light vanilla note on the nose. Aromatic and notably sweet fruited. On the palate, that same oaky sweetness. Light and fresh and persistent. Harmonious if not especially subtle. (JH)
