Domaine J.A Ferret is based in Pouilly-Fuissé and has always been led by young women. From Jeanne Ferret who pioneered vinifying in parcels, to her daughter Colette who carried on the tradition, to now with Audrey Braccini who pushes the quality and name forward. The Domaine’s wines have always been characterised by elegance, which pairs well with the ripeness of the fruit from this far south in Burgundy.
Pouilly-Fuissé’s geography and geology is diverse with dramatic changes of soil types and steeper slopes. Domaine J.A Ferret’s 17 hectares of vineyards contain a mix of limestone, clay and schist so the Chardonnay produced is complex and site-specific. Domaine J.A Ferret’s wines elevate Pouilly-Fuissé’s status by focusing on single vineyard selections and we are fortunate to have a selection alongside their delicious village Pouilly-Fuissé. One of them is the Clos des Prouges. This clos is tiny, only 2ha, and is planted on an east-facing slope. Most of the vineyard dates back to 1956, which makes it one of the oldest owned by the Domaine. Fermentation and ageing is taking place entirely in oak, 25% new. This cuvee is the powerful one of the Domaine with smoky notes and hazelnuts. This wine is perfect for drinking now but could age for another decade plus. We think Domaine Ferret is the one to watch in the Mâconnais yet the prices are very attractive.
