Bright medium red. Vibrant aromas of black cherry, licorice and minerals. Seamless, sappy and explosive on the palate, conveying an impression of silkiness without weight. Really explosive mouthfilling perfume here, even if there's plenty in reserve for a long and positive evolution in bottle. The wonderfully fresh, mounting finish features substantial dusty tannins and resounding black cherry and dark chocolate flavors. "The 2009s are to drink anytime," noted Grivot. "Even this Clos Vougeot would be great with grilled beef now." A great vintage for this bottling, which is partly from vines located in the so-so northeast corner of this vineyard.

The Clos de Vougeot is gorgeous in 2009. This is an especially dark, brooding Clos Vougeot. Dark red cherries, plums, tar and licorice are some of the many notes that take shape in this explosive, beguiling Burgundy. The sheer energy and drive make the Clos Vougeot a standout. Graphite, mint and licorice linger on the pointed, focused finish. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039. Tasted out of barrel at the Domaine. There is a slight saline tang on the nose, with dark berried fruit and a touch of bergamot. Nice lift and expression – just blossoms in the glass with scents of violet. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain of acidity, tenses up towards the tannic finish with great structure and sense of symmetry. Needs 4-5 years to show its true colours. Tasted November 2010.

Mid crimson. Hint of some rather strange wood on the nose. Round fruit, then a bit astringent. Not very comfortable. Edgy. But ambitious! (JR)
