The 2011 Clos de Vougeot boasts serious density and roundness. The finesse of the tannin is especially remarkable. This is an especially sweet, round and inviting Clos Vougeot that stands out for its exceptional balance . Sweet, floral notes add elegance on the finish.

Medium red. Musky aromas of ripe cherry and fresh herbs; the closest to liqueur-like of these 2011s. Silky on entry, then dense, intense and light on its feet in the middle palate, conveying an impression of energy and lift. Broad, serious wine with the stuffing to support its firm tannic spine. This has the structure for a graceful evolution in bottle.

Don't miss! There is enough wood to notice though it doesn't fight with the mostly red berry fruit, spice and pungent earth aromas. There is ample size, weight, power, muscle and concentration to the big-bodied flavors that brim with dry extract that does a fine job of buffering the very firm but not hard tannic spine on the hugely long finish. Moreover, there is excellent depth and overall, this is a big but not massive example that displays excellent balance and harmony.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. There is more vigor adorning Etienne Grivot’s Clos Vougeot 2011 compared to its peers: bright red cherries and bergamot scents, a hint of tea leaf and sous-bois. The palate is herbaceous on the entry with some stem addition, but it displays decent weight and length plus an attractive peppery aftertaste. This is a fine Clos Vougeot in what appeared to be a difficult vintage for the clos.

Some slight metallic note on the nose. An austere wine without the stuffing of charming fruit. Difficult to see burgundian charm in this. (JR)
