The 2021 Pommard Clos des Arvelets 1er Cru is a bit closed on the nose despite encouragement, light tertiary/undergrowth scents reluctantly emerging. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, earthy mulberry fruit with what feels like a stemmy finish whereas in fact, this is nary a stem.

Two barrels instead of ten. No whole bunches and older oak. Tank sample. Riper dark fruit than on the Gevrey En Pallud. Lightly and invitingly peppery with a hint of oak sweetness. Firm, a little chewy yet it is fully harmonious already. Refined, savoury, restrained but long. (JH)
