Tasting Notes and Scores
One of my favorite wines in the cellar is the 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets, a lovely cuvée that wafts from the glass with notes of plums, rose petals, sweet berry fruit, raw cocoa and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, bright and lively, it's sapid and concentrated, with refined tannins and a long, saline finish.

The 2019 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru feels a bit heavy-handed in terms of oak on the nose, and the wood occludes the terroir expression at the moment, but that could well be subsumed with time. The palate is well balanced with a chewy opening—a thick-textured Volnay with plenty of substance, more than its peers. This is maybe a bit overworked, but it retains balance and possesses quite a persistent finish. Perhaps a bit broad-shouldered in its youth, time should shave its rough corners. This is a "big boy". I wonder if this is adjusted in the winery. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.
