Tasting Notes and Scores
The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a very perfumed and floral bouquet that takes time to settle in the glass, displaying lavender-tinged red fruit, potpourri and very fine definition, with subtle use of whole bunch. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannins. This possesses fine acidity, commendable depth and perhaps just a little tightness toward the finish compared to its peers, but there is wonderful density here. This needs four or five more years in bottle, but, my word, I don't think I have ever been smitten by a young Jadot like this, and it romps home as best CSJ in show. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques (Domaine Louis Jadot) is very promising, wafting from the glass with aromas of raspberries, cherries, warm spices, candied peel, rose petals and smoke. Medium to full-bodied, layered and muscular, with serious concentration and rich reserves of ripe, powdery tannin, it concludes with a bright, precise finish.

Cask sample. Bright red! Much less expressive nose than the Estournelles and much less concentrated. Almost as though they are not trying that hard with this exalted appellation. Nothing terribly wrong with it but it really suffers in comparison with the Estournelles at practically half the price. Just a bit ho-hum – as though the yield was a bit high? (JR)
