The 2018 Meursault-Blagny Sous Le Dos d'Ane 1er Cru has a feistier bouquet than the Clos des Mouches Blanc. Quite energetic and tensile, with lovely purity, yellow fruit and hints of peppermint that come through alongside wild fennel. There is a "noble reduction" at play here. The palate is well balanced with a pleasing sappiness on the entry. Fine weight, harmonious with impressive acidity, I admire its gentle build. Definitely worth seeking out. Sous Le Château is one of the most extensive lieux-dits in Saint Romain and extends up to 440 metres, which was why this cuvée was picked as late as September 14th. Taut, tight and very pithy for a vintage like 2018, this has a very low pH of 3.1, subtle gunflint aromas and aromatic 20% new wood. Franck Grux has a special touch in lesser-known sites like this.

Tank sample. Bright and intense with green fruits and citrus. Much more obvious acidity than quite a few white 2018s. Almost severe, though I think it will come into balance once it is bottle for a year or so. Quite a powerful wine, direct and long. (JH)
