Tasting Notes and Scores
The 2008 Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a lively saline, almost seaweed scented bouquet that is precise and intense. The palate is fresh and lively, perhaps just missing a little weight, but there is a sense of elegance and refinement here, traces of lime and quince enlivening the persistent finish. Excellent. Tasted at La Paulée in Beaune.

(malo done, but this wasn't scheduled to be fined until the end of June) Medium yellow. Ripe, clean, highly aromatic nose combines gingery spices, flowers and a honeyed nuance. Fat, silky, sweet and full, boasting strong yellow fruit flavors and impressive volume. This big boy really stains the palate with flavor, but I wanted a bit more lift and nuance. Remy notes that the pH here is a very healthy 3.15.

Somewhat surprisingly, this is more open and expressive than the Bienvenues with very ripe white flower, peach and pear notes introducing dense, powerful and explosive flavors that possess buckets of dry extract and plenty of length. This is marginally less refined but bigger and longer. A choice at the moment. Drink: 2008+.

Just finish malo end Oct, two weeks previously. Deepish gold. Floral nose, less obviously rich than the rather oaky Bienvenues tasted. But with great purity. Very obviously Leflaive style. Still a little fizzy and with lots of density and great structure. Real body. Big and powerful. Very long. (JR)
