Tasting Notes and Scores
Good full red. Wild berries and smoked meat on the nose. Suave and juicy on entry, then vibrant and penetrating in the middle, with a powerful minerality giving the fleshy, sweet fruit a vibrant quality and superb aromatic precision. Less reductive in quality than the Reignots and thus a bit easier to taste today. Finishes with outstanding breadth and substantial dusty tannins.

(with thanks to Alex Goldstein). This is a very fine '04 with almost no sigh of the green meanies on the otherwise agreeably pure, spicy and elegant nose. To be sure, there is a very mild vegetal hint but it's not pungent or even especially noticeable. There is good punch and really lovely detail to the intensely mineral-infused middle weight flavors that culminate in a persistent and refined finish that displays a very slight edginess. For my taste this is close to being ready that it could be enjoyed now though I would suggest giving this another 3 to 5 years of cellar time first if you would like to enjoy a fully mature example. Bouchard did a terrific job raising their 2004 La Romanée, which is clearly a more satisfying wine than the Liger-Belair version in this vintage. Although not exactly an exciting wine, the 2004 is round, supple and shows no hard edges, almost uncharacteristically so for the year. Dried cherry, mint and dried flowers are laced into the saline finish. All things considered, this is a success for the year.

Monopole. Very correct but not that much fun. The light nose hints somehow at compost. Slightly tart, but very delicate, probably due to the vintage but one of those rare wines that makes me wonder whether chaptalisation wouldn’t be a good thing. Long! (JR)

Tasted at the La Romanée vertical at Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair. This is the second vexing bottle of 2004 La Romanée Grand Cru from Liger-Belair that I have encountered. There is a herbaceous note verging on vegetal that dominates the fruit underneath. The palate is medium-bodied, a little rustic and very leafy like so many 2004s. It has a Loire-like herbaceous, bell pepper finish that just does not feel correct. Caveat emptor. Tasted June 2015.
