Good dark red. Very ripe aromas of blackberry liqueur, licorice and molten dark chocolate. Plush, ripe and sweet in the mouth, but a bit less refined and primary than the 2015 version, in spite of showing a cool minty nuance. Finishes with serious but nicely ripe tannins.

The 2014 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiets is a vineyard that tends to ripen the first. Guillaume d'Angerville opined that the wine from this vineyard has "gained momentum" in recent vintages. It has a very perfumed, floral bouquet with wilted rose petals infusing the vibrant red cherry and raspberry fruit, a distant tang of the sea in the distance. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, a little spicier than the Clos des Angles, smooth and fleshy in texture, gently building to a caressing finish that is very...Fremiets. Give this 2-3 years before broaching, preferably longer.

A little more spice than in the Clos des Angles but also an inviting cherry-vanilla sweetness. A good deal firmer in texture than the Clos des Angles. Lightish in weight/body, dry in finesse. All held in a refined dry structure. So precise and accomplished. (JH)
