Tasting Notes and Scores

92.5 ST

(13% alcohol after a touch of chaptalization): Healthy bright red. Fresh aromas and flavors of spices, flowers, red licorice and mint show a bit more mocha torrefaction and a bit less red fruitiness than most of the foregoing samples. Then a step up in flesh and sweetness in the mouth from the premier crus at this address; more voluminous and horizontal. Boasts terrific soil-driven minerality (these vines are situated very close to Chambertin) but not quite as complex today as the 2015 was at the same stage of its evolution. The rising finish features fine-grained tannins and savory, spicy length.

The 2016 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a slightly muffled bouquet that requires more clarity. Dark berry fruit, hints of leather and undergrowth. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, and although it is missing a little depth, it is driven by the fine bead of acidity and feels pert and fresh on the finish - very "Charmes". Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

Mild reduction pushes the fruit to the background but I doubt that it will last. Otherwise there is excellent size, weight and intensity to the tautly muscular, precise and powerful big-bodied flavors that also flash an interesting hint of citrus character on the very tightly wound finish. Like several of the wines in the range this is going to require at least some bottle age to unwind and flesh out as this is quite linear and youthfully austere today.
