Bright dark red. Soil-driven scents of smoky silex minerality and iron lifted by a high note of peppery spices. Very rich, deep and powerful, with a compellingly chewy, penetrating quality to its dark raspberry and flinty mineral flavors. The wine's substantial firm tannins are perfectly supported by crushed-stone extract. A wonderfully tactile, serious Mazoyères in the making, and showing more in the early going than the more elegantly styled Charmes.

Cask sample. 80% whole bunch, destructured: ‘On garde que les pedicels’ (we keep the stems). Rich and round and not that high in acidity (compared with Charmes-Chambertin) but with great richness and velvety texture. Big and resonant. (JR)
