Glowing, resonant, rounded aromas and flavours, with fruit and texture perfectly synthesized.  This is ripe enough for there to be a little meaty warmth beginning to show, yet it also has a spring-like sappy energy inscribed within it; the result of this tension is pure deliciousness.  This would be the Clos de Tart I’d chose to drink at present if I was indeed the Duke of Burgundy.

From the bottom of the hill: Full red. Spicy aromas of blackberry, currant, tobacco and smoke. Superripe, large-scaled and spicy; powerful, rich and verging on aggressive. Impressively dense and sweet but almost too much. From the middle of the hill: Full ruby-red. Superripe but sappier aromas of black fruits, minerals and gunflint, with a medicinal nuance. Dense and very ripe, with nearly roasted flavors of dark berries, minerals and spices. This has grand cru intensity. From the top of the hill: Ruby-red. Highly perfumed, floral nose hints at tangy strawberry, flint and flowers. Offers an uncanny combination of power and complexity. Extremely long and fine. This has the class and grip of Musigny. An extraordinary sample. An assemblage of the wine three major components: Deep ruby-red. Knockout nose of black raspberry, gunflint, minerals, tar, game and flowers. Sappy, supple and fat, with almost candied richness and ripeness of fruit. Superripe but fresh; this reminded me of the very best 1997s. Finishes with lush tannins and terrific slow-mounting fruit and mineral flavor.

Despite the high alcohol, the wine does not taste hot though there is a trace of finishing warmth and the tannins are almost hidden by the sappy extract. The style of the 2000 is much more forward than in either '98 or the '99 though it will take the better part of a decade to reveal its full potential. Delicious yet very serious. Drink: 2007-14

Mid crimson. Surprisingly deep crimson – real life to the look of it. Gamey and exotic and rich on the nose – a really lovely surprise. Very sweet and flattering. Loose – the tannins have all melted – but a really superb drink now. Very flattering and with more guts than many of its peers from this vintage. For perfection perhaps one would want more acid and tannin, but not if you wanted to drink it tonight! (JR)
