Very attractive sweet, ripe fruit with a fine array of red and violet flowers, as well as some briar and chalky, stony nuances. The palate delivers a strong core of powerfully dense tannins that carry long and even. This is regal, true to type and beautifully executed. Old vines and 100 per cent whole clusters here. The 2017 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru matures in 50% new oak with two-thirds whole cluster fruit. It has a very attractive and detailed bouquet with wild strawberry, raspberry, freshly tilled loam and autumn leaf aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, a little chewy on the mid-palate with good substance. This is a solid, though not muscular Corton with fine grip and impressive density on the finish. This should offer long-term pleasure.

Aromas of sweet red berries, plums, spicy forest floor and dark chocolate introduce the 2017 Corton Grand Cru Clos du Roi, a medium to full-bodied, incipiently velvety wine with tangy acids, powdery structuring tannins and a vibrant core of fruit. This is a delicate middle-weight Clos du Roi in the making.

Barrel sample but has been racked. Two-thirds whole bunch, 50% new oak. Iron and clay on limestone. Vines 70+ years. Bought in the Thomas Moillard puchase (with Dujac) in 2005. Bright cherry red. Subtle but enchanting dark-red fruits on the nose. Pure and full of life. Delicate texture already, gentle and elegant yet very persistent with a long finish that is both fruit and mineral. (JH)
