The 2017 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from a métayage , although in return for farming the vineyard, Mortet takes both his and the owners production. It matures in 75% new oak and 100% de-stemmed (for the moment). It has a perfumed bouquet with a mixture of red and black fruit, hints of pot pourri and lavender that emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with candied red fruit on the entry, smooth in texture, gentle in terms of grip and perhaps just missing a little complexity towards the finish where I think some stem addition would have imparted more personality, another dimension. Fine, but there is better to come.

Offering up aromas of sweet berries, plums, rich spices and espresso roast, Arnaud Mortet's 2017 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru is medium to full-bodied, ample and open-knit, with a simple, somewhat facile profile. Of all this new label's bottlings, it's the cuvée that will require the most work to bring the vines up to the Mortet standard and find the depth and energy it's missing.
