Tasting Notes and Scores

92 NM

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. Clear and bright in color, the Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux St Jacques 2011 has a very suave bouquet with quite lush raspberry coulis and wild strawberry aromas, with appealing underlying minerality that will surely be enhanced with bottle age. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and well-judged acidity. This is harmonious and svelte, generous on the finish, a lithe and nubile Lavaux Saint Jacques that is well crafted. Not quite as compelling as last year, but there's bags of potential.

Generous amounts of wood fight slightly with the otherwise very fresh aromas of plum, wet stone, dark berries and humus. There is excellent richness to the mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors that possess excellent energy on the supple and suave mid-palate that possesses a relatively sophisticated mouth feel before culminating in a well-balanced and persistent finish. Even though the Lavaut is consistently Mortet's best 1er, today it's no more complex or persistent than the Champeaux. Drink: 2021+
