The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos de la Maréchale 1er Cru has a simple nose with brambly red fruit, briar and a discreet marine influence in the background. Nuanced but nicely focused with assiduous use of oak. The palate is well balanced with more saturated pliable tannins than its peers. A tad more extraction is evident towards the finish with dark fruit and a relatively polished mouthfeel. Give this two or three years in bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Cask sample brought over this morning. Transparent garnet. Delicate, well-balanced nose. Sweet and yet with lots of detail. Lots to explore here with, as the winemaker says, 'a return to our youth'. Long. And with the usual Mugnier delicacy. (JR)

Cask sample. Lightish crimson. Fresh cherry fruit soars from the glass in purity. Then, just so much intensity on the palate with deft, fine, fine tannins that give a slightly stony finesse on the finish. Deceptively approachable for a wine that is likely to age well. Sour-fresh, mouth-cleansing, very long finish. (JH)

Racked one week before tasting. Cask sample. Surprising lighter, mid-cherry hue. Red cherry, strawberry and raspberry fruit. Fresh and primary but slightly closed. Firm, well-knit tannins. A little closed, but showing good length. (MH)
