Tasting Notes and Scores

92.5 ST

Bright medium red. Red cherry, rose petal and white pepper on the nose. At once velvety and juicy, conveying a captivating restrained sweetness to the flavors of cherry, raspberry and strawberry. Displays excellent energy but there's nothing sharp about this wine's acidity. The intense, sappy red berry flavors carry through a very long, fine-grained finish featuring complicating saline minerality and a hint of tart cranberry. This wine showed a darker fruit character and more Gevrey wildness from barrel in November of 2015 but right now it's a brisk bomb of red fruits and wonderfully light on its feet. Really leaves the taste buds humming.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Olivier Bernstein's 2014 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers was showing quite a bit of new oak on the nose, although it seems in sync with the fruit and there is plenty of it behind the wood. It just needs more time to assimilate. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, the wood (again) rather prominent at the moment, although I feel it will be absorbed with requisite bottle age. There is something quite effervescent about this Cazetiers and I actually mistook it for Armand Rousseau. Make of that what you will. Tasted September 2017.
