Tasting Notes and Scores
Roumier's 2009 Bonnes-Mares is without question one of the wines of the vintage. Firm yet beautifully integrated tannins provide the backdrop for the highly nuanced, expressive aromas and flavors that emerge from the glass. All the elements are in the right place in this extraordinary, moving wine. At times the Bonnes-Mares comes across as very powerful, at other times it is quite sensual. In other words, it is pure magic in the glass. Burgundy fans will flock to the Musigny because of its rarity but there is a very real possibility that the Bonnes-Mares will outshine it over time. Bright medium red. Distinctly blacker on the nose than the Amoureuses, offering scents of blackberry, blueberry and peony. Wonderfully sweet and energetic on the palate, showing terrific stuffing but coming across as tightly coiled today. At once creamy and structured for long aging. Most impressive today on the firmly tannic, palate-staining finish. Roumier compared this to the 1990 version but says this one has firmer tannins. A great and long-lived wine in the making.

Tasted out of barrel at the Domaine. This has a very seductive bouquet, the blueberry component not as pronounced as de Vogue, with a slight clayey element augmenting its mineralite. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, wonderful focus here, although I prefer the precision of the Amoureueses. But it seems to coalesce in the glass and the aftertaste has impressive persistency. Tasted January 2011.

Don't miss!
Mild reduction knocks down the nose though there is a palpable sense of energy running through the rich, powerful and brooding broad-shouldered flavors that benefit from a huge dollop of dry extract that pushes the very firm tannic spine to the background on the explosive and youthfully austere finish that possesses genuinely outstanding length. I very much like the balance here and this should age effortlessly for decades. Drink 2024+

60% whole bunch, 'even though the stems are green in general but the interior is already transformed into wood.' Quite deep crimson. Strong gaminess on the nose, and density. Quite showy on the nose – purple fruits and real tension. SO different from the Amoureuses which is all delicacy. Solid and earnest. Sweet and rich and very flattering. Lots of purple fruit, a solid pleasure. (JR)
