Tasting Notes and Scores
(13.4% alcohol): Dark red-ruby. Brown spices and minerals currently dominate dark fruits on the nose. Plush, velvety and full but quite backward in the early going; a distinctly dark style of Chambolle but not yet coming alive. Finishes with substantial ripe tannins and lingering blueberry and spice flavors. This wine will need time in bottle to burn off some of its baby fat.

The 2015 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru has a tight, compact bouquet with some oak that needs to be fully subsumed, but there is primal, untamed intensity here. The palate is quite muscular on the entry, almost equidistant in style between Chambolle and Morey, and delivers plenty of substance and grip toward the defined finish. This is a bit of a brute at the moment, but I think it will pull through with bottle age. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Tasted blind, Roumier's 2015 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras showed well, exhibiting aromas of raspberries, cherries, peonies and espresso roast, framed by some toasty new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and even lavish, with an expansive attack, a generous core of dark, savory fruit and a framing of satiny structuring tannins. This is quite a ripe, expressive rendition of Les Cras, in keeping with recent vintages of this Roumier bottling, such as 2012.
