Tasting Notes and Scores

90 AM

Outstanding. This is exceptionally pretty and notably elegant as the nose features a moderately pitched combination of floral notes, red pinot and cassis aromas. There is a lovely mineral component to the satin-textured medium-bodied flavors where the supporting tannins are ultra-refined, all wrapped in a lacy and persistent finish. A classic Chambolle of finesse. Drink: 2017+

Bright, deep red. Sappy aromas of raspberry, spices and minerals. Sweet, supple and lush, offering excellent volume for village wine. The wine's sappy quality gives it inner-mouth energy and early deliciousness. Christophe Roumier expressed the opinion in November that the 2012s don't have enough tannins to really shut down in the bottle; on the other hand, he reported seeing more pips in 2010 than in 2011, a year in which the phenolic ripeness came earlier here.

The 2010 Chambolle-Musigny Les Combottes is a touch rounder and deeper than the villages. Layers of dark red fruit caress the palate on the generous, inviting finish. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2029.

The 2010 Chambolle-Musigny shows terrific energy and class. There is lovely freshness and vibrancy in the aromas and flavors, with an underpinning of minerality that gives the wine its focus and sense of direction. Bright floral notes add lift on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022. The only real problem with Christophe Roumier’s 2010s is the production, which was severely compromised by the December 2009 frost and the poor weather of 2010, especially during the flowering. On a more positive note, the wines are marked by their total transparency. Some of the entry-level wines are a bit on the light side, but the best 1er Crus and the Grand Crus are magical. Roumier started picking on September 28. Some of the wines were lightly chaptalized. I will report on the 2009s in our April issue. Importer: Diageo Chateau & Estate Wines, Napa CA; tel.
