Tasting Notes and Scores

92 AM

Interestingly for an obviously ripe wine this remains cool and reserved with spiced wild berry fruit aromas that lead to sappy and distinctly earthy broad-scaled flavors that are robust and powerful with a sappy and seductive finish of considerable length. There is excellent mid-palate concentration that really unfolds yet the finish really tightens up and actually becomes linear. While not a genuinely great vintage by the storied standards of this wine, it is an impressive '07. Drink 2015+.

Black raspberry and dark cherry confiture tinged with cocoa powder and coconut lend Rouget’s 2007 Echezeaux a flattering sweetness of aroma and complement its subtly creamy, soft, generous inner-mouth impression (even when initially tasted at cellar temperature). But enough sense of fresh fruit and of lift is retained here to convey some sense of elegance; and suggestions of beef marrow add something beyond a fruit dimension. I suspect this will keep well for at least 6-8 years, but confess I cannot see a reason to wait. (Comparing the 2006 alongside, I agree with Rouget that it seems to combine the best aspects of 2008 and 2007, and neither of us find evidence that the 2006s as a group are “shutting down.”)

(these wines were bottled in August of 2009) Good full red. Very ripe aromas of redcurrant, tobacco, coffee and underbrush. Sweeter, creamier and deeper than the Vosne villages, but showing a good bit of oak today. Quite broad but could use a bit more refinement. Finishes with substantial tongue-dusting tannins. This may still be affected by the relatively recent bottling.
