Bright, deep red with ruby highlights. Much less showy on the nose than the Clos Saint-Jacques, but with a lovely high pitch to the aromas of black and blue fruits, menthol, game and noble herbs. Like liquid velvet on the palate, showing medicinal black cherry and crushed stone flavors complicated by subtle hints of leather and game. This explosive wine is most impressive today on the huge, ripely tannic finish, which shows a bit less floral lift than the Clos Saint-Jacques but is even longer.

A potently expressive nose blends both wood and natural spice together with distinctly cool, pure and ripe wild red berries, earth and underbrush. The palate impression is a gorgeous combination of power and refinement along with flat out superb complexity on the explosively long, focused and beautifully well-balanced finish. The supporting structure is dense but fine and this should prove to be a moderately long-lived example. Drink: 2028+

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Chambertin Clos de Bèze 2011 from Rousseau was showing too much wood when I tasted it just after bottling. Whereas some 2011s from Rousseau seem to have been handicapped by that, others like this have shrugged it off. Here, it has a more generous bouquet compared to its peers, armed with lush red cherries, strawberry and cassis. The oak vanillin is noticeable but synced with the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a plush texture. There is very good depth here and arresting purity – red cherries strawberry and candied orange peel that segue into a citrus fresh and vibrant finish with plenty of energy and race. Superb.

The 2011 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze is refined, silky and expressive. This is an especially understated, lifted Bèze that speaks to finesse rather than power, with a bit more red-toned fruit and overall brightness than is typically the case. Scents of rose petal, anise, savory herbs and mint add nuance throughout, while veins of underlying salinity extend the finish. The 2011 Bèze impresses with its energy and poise, but it also shows a slightly vegetal note that has not been present in previous tastings.

The 2011 Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru is showing a lot of oak on the nose (100% new) that I feel is excessive. The palate follows suit, showing a lot of oak that rather drowns out the character of Clos de Beze. Let us see how it ages, but at the moment this seems laden down by expectation and perhaps a little overzealousness in the cellars?
