Tasting Notes and Scores

92.5 ST

(this cuvee, the Clos de Beze and the Chambertin are aged in 100% new barriques Good bright red. Explosive, perfumed nose offers black raspberry, cassis, rose petal and spicy oak. Juicy, floral and aromatic in the mouth, with cassis and violet flavors that are sweetened but not overwhelmed by the new oak. Very dense, chewy, rich wine with superb persistence. This wine also showed a strong cassis character in vintages 1999 and 1996, notes Corinne.

The sweet black cherry-scented 2003 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St.-Jacques is medium to full- bodied, rich, and boasts outstanding depth in its blackberry-laced core. Expansive and lush on the attack, its long finish reveals firm, almost rustic tannin that are worrisome. Projected maturity: 2009-2018? Importer: Frederick Wildman & Sons, New York, NY; tel. A subtle touch of wood spice frames elegant, pure and moderately ripe red pinot fruit aromas that possess nuances of plum, cassis and clove that lead to very round, supple and pretty middle weight flavors underpinned by buried structure and a stunningly complex and beautifully long finish. This is not a big or powerful wine but it brings a strikingly pretty combination of finesse, complexity and inner mouth feel. Stylish and classy.

Dark purplish crimson. Not dark but notably blueish. Broad and silky and pretty complete. Not even the merest hint of sweetness, funnily enough, but real class and life. Real zest. Not massive – in fact blind I wouldn’t guess it were from this especially ripe vintage. Well done. Notable but not excessive tannins. (JR)
