Tasting Notes and Scores
FIVE STAR WINE
80% new wood. This shows a lovely flowing red purple colour, not the deepest nor does it need to be. The bouquet just speaks of harmony. Open from the start has never closed down and will be wondrous: even the empty glass breathes a magical bouquet.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has an ethereal bouquet with dark cherry, blueberry, light wilted rose petal and shucked oyster shell scents. It unfolds beautifully in the glass, possibly the classiest and more alluring of the CSJ quintet. The palate is well balanced with finely-chiselled red cherry fruit intermixed with raspberry, crushed stone and a dab of spice. Harmonious through to the structured finish. The mineralité shines through this wine. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting. Drinking Window: 2026 - 2050.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques has turned out brilliantly in bottle. Unwinding in the glass with notes of red berries, cassis and peonies, mingled with hints of woodsmoke, raw cocoa, orange rind and exotic spices. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, structured around ripe, powdery tannins, it's layered and lively, maintaining impeccable balance in this warm vintage. Long and penetrating, this is more tightly wound in bottle than it was from barrel—something that bodes very well for its long-term evolution.

Outstanding.
An attractively fresh nose features cool and relatively high-toned red cherry, pomegranate and hints of rose petal, the sauvage and humus, all of which is trimmed in admirably discreet wood influence. The mouthfeel of the precise, intense, equally fine and mineral-driven medium weight flavors is remarkably sophisticated, all wrapped in an impressively long and superbly complex finish that flashes focused power. This is terrific and should age accordingly as it's very firm and compact. Drink: 2038+

They have had to do some replanting here though they have been putting it off for as long as they could, Cyrielle Rousseau warned her father that they would regret it if they didn’t do it now. A mix of pepper and dark floral character. Deliciously scented (not perfumed). Open-armed from the start. Come hither. On the palate, juicy, surprisingly dense but still with that mix of savoury spice and floral, pure dark fruit. Less open on the palate than on the nose. Paper-fine texture, fresh and long with impeccable harmony. I can imagine drinking this now. The sample was taken from a new barrel but it doesn’t show. (JH)
