Tasting Notes and Scores

95-97 RP

Wine Advocate February, 2012

The 2010 Ruchottes-Chambertin is an intensely cool, reticent wine. The bouquet recalls the Mazis, but then the firm Ruchottes tannins set in. Ultimately the Ruchottes is built on purity, definition and nuance. The chiseled aromas and flavors possess stunning detail, but it will be some time before the 2010 is ready to drink. Still, I very much like the energy and drive. Bright, floral notes add lift and vibrancy on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2025-2045.

My visit with Eric Rousseau was one of the highlights of my fall trip. The 2010s are fabulous from top to bottom. Rousseau started picking on September 22. The fruit saw about four days of cold soak followed by a cuvaison that lasted anywhere from 15 to 21 days, depending on the wine. I was equally thrilled with the 2009s I tasted from bottle. I will have more on those wines in our April issue. Importer: Frederic Wildman & Sons, New York, NY; tel. (212) 355-0700

A broad ranging nose displays notes of very ripe blue berry, floral, cassis, plum and pungent wet stone notes. The ultra-refined, pure and silky medium-bodied flavors possess outstanding delineation and this positively floats across the palate. Despite the beguiling mid-palate, this tightens up considerably on the balanced, powerful and tautly muscular finish that explodes with mouth tannin-buffering sap. This is firmly structured for the long haul and it will need plenty of cellar time before it's completely ready. Drink: 2022+

Solid and introvert and firm. Wait a while for this. Firm and dry on the end – within the Rousseau idiom that is. Some delicacy but not explosive. (JR)
